Sue Wilson's Voiceover: Musings on a Meat Free Year Anyone who knows me knows I have a heart for animals. And while I am partial to dogs...

Sue Wilson's Voiceover: Defending the Defenseless Last year, I decided to give up meat for Lent. This February marks one year of my being meat-free....

Thursday mornings at 8:20, the WQMX Wynn and Wilson morning show welcomes GeorjetteThomas from One Of A Kind Pet Rescue.

She tells us about some special animals that need a home. It's our goal to not only find a home for our featured homeless pet, but to educate and encourage animal adoption in our area..

Although we feature mostly dogs on this site, there are many wonderful cats available at One Of A Kind Pets too.

True to its name, One Of A Kind is truly a one of a kind place with a special mission. They not only rescue animals off the street, but they also go to "the pound" and rescue animals who are about to be euthanized. They literally save these animals from certain death.
You can visit their adoption center located at 1699 West Market Street, Akron,Ohio 44313 or online at

Meet Heidi

Finding “purpose” in one’s life is not always a clear journey. Many people have direction at a very early age and for some of us the path is winding. Eventually, and without a predetermined length of time, we all get to define our purpose individually. Imagine being assigned a “purpose” and having no control of your future. Worse yet, imagine an allocated number of days to perform mandated tasks and when your task is completed you no longer have a purpose. This is the definition of a puppy mill.

Moms and Dads are kept in cages, required to perform on demand, and must produce the most desirable size, color, and tempered pups for the purpose of monetary gains for the breeder. If puppies grow too old they are disposed of and if adult dogs are no longer productive in their breeding they too will loose their life. Most of these beautiful pets have never experienced freedom of any kind. Recently, fourteen beautiful purebred dogs were rescued from an execution in the back of a barn. You see, they had outlived their usefulness. Ranging in ages from 4 ˝ months to 4 years, these sweet dogs were now considered poor breeders and were scheduled to be destroyed. We believe these deserving dogs performed and met the demands of mankind and now want them to know the love, security, and compassion that humanity can offer them.

She will need kind & consistent training because she is a neglected girl and show signs of being insecure. With your patience and consistency, she will learn and become your next best friend - and the pet companion you've always wanted. Containment is "key" - either on the end of a safely installed lead / leash or in a fenced yard - when rescuing a dog until trust and boundary training is established. Furthermore, dogs do not fare well when encountering a moving car. Keep in mind ... many dogs cannot ever be trusted off-lead.

Do you have up to 15 years to share with a selfless dog? Do you understand the commitment? Can you provide a "forever home?" Do you have what it takes to be the best pet parent ever? If you can answer "yes" to these questions we can talk about a future for Heidi!

Heidi is up-to-date with routine shots and spayed.
Meet Lily

Most of us enjoy socializing and our lives would not be complete without daily interactions with friends and family, as well as the opportunity to visit and experience new places. We find these interactions mentally enriching and beneficial. Conversely, living in isolation with limited experiences can make a person fearful and cause depression. We witness the same correlation in our domestic pets. Lily is concerned with new sounds, movements, and her environment.

At nearly two years of age, Lily wants to love and be loved; however, she is not sure if she can trust. Watching her approach us – an inch at a time – suggests her desire to bond and experience affection. Because we know socialization of one’s dog is vitally important, it is difficult to understand why Lily was not afforded the opportunity.

Many people don't realize the impact the absence of socialization has on their pets and how it can affect the rest of their lives. Lily is in need of a compassionate and understanding owner that will help her develop confidence and trust. This sweet girl wants to feel secure. In a contained backyard, she enjoys her ball and will happily bound in the snow to find it. In a social situation, she shows deep concerns. Desensitizing a concerned dog can be a drawn out process, but witnessing a dog progress is well worth it! One day, Lily will pay her owner back in tail wags & kisses.

If you are a committed pet parent, understand what it takes to be responsible for a selfless dog, and have up to 15 years to spend with Lily, then she may be your next best friend!

UPDATE: Lily went into a home and was returned after 2 weeks. WHY? Because the neighborhood association said that she weighed too much based on their guidelines for residency. The fine print states a maximum of 40 pounds and Lily weighs around 60 – 65. Her adopted Mom hadn’t read the fine print and came into the shelter sobbing and did not want to return her but hadn't any choice. She was devastated and Lily was devastated too --- AGAIN!!!

Lily is up-to-date with routine shots and spayed/neutered.
Meet Trixie!
Humanity could learn a lesson from watching her ...

Rescued from animal control, with an impending birth, sweet Trixie had 12 puppies in just a few days after her arrival. Not only did she let us help her during the birthing process, but she showed how amazingly compassionate she was to her babies. Separating them by color, she would nurse them in stages. As they grew, she remained loving and tolerant of all the activity around her. When we finally separated her from the babies, she was very sad.

This beautiful girl deserves to know what it is like to be loved and protected - like she taught us with her own babies! Now through her quarantine period, she is ready to experience love and security in the safe arms of a committed owner and to meet her "forever home and family." Never to be orphaned again! Never to give birth again! Now, it's her turn to be the center of one's attention!!!

She will need kind understanding and training because she has not been cared for properly.

If you can answer "yes" to these questions we can talk about a future for Trixie!

Trixie is up-to-date with routine shots, house trained, micro-chipped and spayed/neutered.
Meet Blazer … Suffering and sick, tied to a tree, lonely and destined to die.

Showing signs of obvious neglect and testing positive for heartworm, Blazer was rescued at around 7 years of age. Picked up off the street and brought into the APL for an assessment, the staff decided this sweet and gentle boy was not only deserving of treatment, but the opportunity to know a “real” home and family.

In short time, Blazer’s new family walked into the lobby of the APL and adopted him. The staff was so pleased to know that his days of abuse and neglect were over.

Or were they?

Two years later, canvassing in a deeply wooded area for an abandoned litter of puppies, the APL happened upon a familiar face … tied to a tree, and nowhere near a residence, stood an emaciated Blazer.

How could this have happened – again?

Immediately, OOAKPR was contacted by the APL and asked to assume responsibility for Blazer and his medical treatment. Without hesitation, Blazer was brought into the clinic and treatment was administered. Knowing his condition may worsen before improvement, and not wanting to leave him unattended, Joe, a member of the kennel staff, spent the entire night lying next to him on the clinic floor.

At nearly 10 years of age, and deserving to know the kindness of humanity, we are hopeful that an adopter will come forward and offer Blazer the best years of his life.

We Saved His Life But You Can Give Him The Gift Of A Real Home
Meet Buckette!

Buckette? What kind of a name is that? This puppy looks nothing like her name and is as cute as can be! Someone thought this was a funny name for this little girl so keep in mind ... you can change her name! UPDATE: They tell me it is pronounced Buck - ette because she is an Ohio Buckeye fan ... whatever! They also tell me that I should have known that considering my name is Georj - ette! Again ... whatever! You STILL can change the name!!!

What a funny little girl this dog is! We love her and you will too. She enjoys the "human touch" and yet she is as fun & energetic as any Border Collie mix-breed pup will (& should) be. Check out the whites of her eyes ... how cute is that??? And, her eyes always look like that! They are unique!!! Almost human! This girl weighs about 20 pounds right now, but still has some growing to do. And, is the last of her litter to get a home.

Now through her quarantine period, she is ready to experience love and security in the safe arms of an owner and to meet her "forever home and family." She will need kind & consistent training because she is young and immature. With your patience and consistency, she will learn and become your next best friend - and the pet companion you've always wanted.

Containment is "key" - either on the end of a safely installed lead / leash or in a fenced yard - when rescuing a dog until trust and boundary training is established. Furthermore, these small dogs do not fare well when encountering a moving car. Do you have 15 years to share with a selfless dog? Do you understand the commitment? Can you provide a "forever home?" Do you have what it takes to be the best pet parent ever? If you can answer "yes" to these questions we can talk about a future for Buck- ette!

Buckette is up-to-date with routine shots and spayed/neutered.
Meet Isabelle!

Note From Foster Care Provider ... Isabelle has been with us a month now. We have learned a lot about her since her arrival. Of course there are some questions we will never have answers to - like exactly how old she is. My guess is 4 - 6 years but there is no way of knowing. I think her grey hairs prematurely age her!

She has really come alive in our home. I would describe her as the perfect balance between a couch potato indoors and a fun loving playful dog outdoors. She loves to play tug-o-war and fetch and will actually drop the tennis ball when asked. It is pretty clear that she was invisible fence trained at some point, perhaps a little too well because she still afraid to cross what she perceives is the invisible fence line in our fenced in back yard - she seems to think we have an invisible fence.

My hope for her is that, with time, she will overcome that lasting reminder of her past. She appears to have had some obedience training, she knows sit, stay, wait, come. She has excellent manners and is completely house trained. We no longer crate her at night and she appreciates the freedom of sleeping on a dog bed upstairs among family. I continue to crate her if I leave the house during the day. The longest I have left her is between 4 and 5 hours and she is fine with that.

Isabelle loves everyone she meets, my kids, husband and anyone that comes to our house. She is very alert and will let us know if we have a guest. She loves her walks and is happy to take a nap when she gets home. She really enjoys the snow and it is sheer joy to watch her bounding and leaping through the snow after the squirrels. The only thing better than chasing squirrels is chasing squirrels with a friend. Biscuit (our 25lb Terrier mix) is happy to help her out but is still a little intimidated by her size.

Isabelle does not seem to like cats and show a high-prey instinct for other wild animals. She is very friendly toward other dogs and enjoys their company. She is very affectionate and loves to be where the family is, whether that is hiking in the woods or lazing on the couch, this is a dog that just wants to belong and be loved.

Signed, Fostercare Mom

Isabelle - is up-to-date with routine shots, house trained, micro-chipped and is spayed.
Meet Mr. Miagi!

How can anyone resist this face? This boy is a short-haired/Persian mix-breed cat and he gets all the looks! Mr. Miagi was originally rescued from the pound and enjoyed the luxury of a home and family for a considerable amount of time. Sadly, and too soon, he has found himself homeless once again. After being part of this new family for quite a long time, his adopted parents faced some hardships and couldn’t care for Mr. Miagi any longer. This sweet boy has now ended up back in a shelter thru no fault of his own. We are looking for a “forever home” for this sweet boy because Mr. Miagi doesn’t deserve to be orphaned again!
Meet Oreo!

Is he not the most expressive dog ever?! Check out his smile --- he just can't help himself!!! He wants to be happy. It is thought that he is a Spaniel mix-breed boy. This breed requires daily exercise. Spaniels are energetic and at 2 years of age, his energy is fun! As with all dogs, daily regular exercise will meet the needs of Oreo and should make him (& his new owner) a happy boy. This young guy is good with other dogs & we haven't any reservations with children. Containment is "key" with all dogs - especially the higher energy breeds - until boundary training has been performed, trust is established, and they feel secure in their next home. We recommend a fenced yard or a safe and secure leash for brief tie-out sessions. If you are a committed pet parent and want to be part of the development of a great dog that now has the opportunity to thrive, come to meet Oreo. Do you have up to 15 years to commit? Can you provide a "forever home?" Do you understand what it takes to be a responsible pet owner? If so, Oreo may be your next best friend! Due to space constraints, he is residing at our clinic. Please call ahead to see him. We thank all of you for your continued support and for caring --- we care deeply too. Oreo is up-to-date with routine shots and spayed/neutered.

Meet Cookie!

Is he not the most cuddly looking dog ever?!

It is thought that he is a Dalmatian mix-breed boy. This breed requires daily exercise. Dalmatians are energetic but at 5 years of age, his energy is just about perfect! As with all dogs, daily regular exercise will meet the needs of Cookie and should make him (& his new owner) a happy boy.

If you are a committed pet parent and want to be part of the development of a great dog that now has the opportunity to thrive, come to meet Cookie.

Do you have up to 15 years to commit? Can you provide a "forever home?" Do you understand what it takes to be a responsible pet owner? If so, Cookie may be your next best friend! Due to space constraints, he is residing at our clinic. Please call ahead to see him.

We thank all of you for your continued support and for caring --- we care deeply too.

Buddy is up-to-date with routine shots and spayed/neutered.

Meet Buddy!

Here's Buddy's story ... Friendship brings so many blessings to our lives. Sometimes the reward is a confidant that offers a patient ear and kind advice. At other times it's the quiet calm of just being in their company. Whatever the benefit, we'd all agree that true friendships are a valued gift. Buddy's story is of deep friendship - and then sorrow. He was the best friend to an adult mentally challenged person. Due to a sudden life-altering situation, Buddy's life has changed and he is now in need of a "forever home". Buddy's days were spent providing comfort, unconditional love and companionship to his owner. It was a very important job and he did it well. His selfless and unending love made her world a better place and Buddy was happy to help - even if it meant his world might change someday too soon. Now in need of a home and security, this 4 year old Golden Retriever / Labrador mix-breed boy awaits his next assignment. Will it be the same? Or, will it be a completely different life? Whatever it will be, Buddy will adapt nicely and be the most loyal family member ever. This sweet boy wants a home. Might his next home be yours? If you are interested in adopting Buddy please call 330.760.0763 for an appointment. Tax-deductible donations can be made to: One of A Kind Pet Rescue. Notation: Everyone needs a Buddy! The adoption center is located at 1699 West Market Street, Akron, Ohio 44313. oneofakindpets.org

Buddy is up-to-date with routine shots and spayed/neutered.

Meet Domino!

Meet Domino. And, he is stunning looking! It is thought that he is a Cattle Dog - Husky mix-breed boy.

Both breeds require daily exercise. Huskies are "runners" & Cattle Dogs are "workers" and prefer a job. Daily regular exercise will meet the needs of Domino and should make him (& his new owner) a happy boy.

This young guy is good with cats & dogs & we haven't any reservations with children. Full grown, he is a little on the smaller side and weighs in at approximately 37 pounds.

Containment is "key" with all dogs - especially the Husky breed - until boundary training has been performed, trust is established, and he feels secure in his next home. We recommend a fenced yard or a safe and secure leash for brief tie-out sessions. Note: many Husky's can NEVER be trusted off-lead.

If you are a committed pet parent and want to be part of the development of a great dog that now has the opportunity to thrive, come to meet Domino.

Do you have up to 15 years to commit to a selfless pet? Do you understand what it takes to be a responsible pet owner? If so, Domino may be your next best friend! Due to space constraints, he is residing at our clinic. Please call ahead to see him. We thank all of you for your continued support and for caring --- we care deeply too.

Domino is up-to-date with routine shots and spayed/neutered.

Meet Gail!

What a girl! And, to think she was scheduled for euthanasia because she had a double ear infection and a "benign" mammary cyst. We love this gorgeous WHITE purebred Labrador and we believe you will too!

Labradors are the #1 most desired breed in this country; however, the #1 most euthanized breed too. Why? Because breeders "over-breed" to meet the demands of what the public wants. At 8 weeks of age, Labs are purchased with no understanding of the breed and are OFTEN surrendered to "pounds" when owners tire of the demands of the dog. These guys require your help to become the best dogs ever. And they are the best dogs ever when loved and treated appropriately! Get educated and make the right choices ...

Now through her quarantine period, she is ready for her "forever home and family." She will need kind & consistent training to enforce what this girl already knows. With your patience and consistency, she will learn and become your next best friend. Containment is "key" - either on the end of a safely installed lead / leash or in a fenced yard - when rescuing a dog until trust and boundary training is established. After all, many of these guys have been living on the land and may hit the road to pursue the only home they've known. Even if they are not wanted anymore.

Do you have 15 years to share with a selfless dog? Do you understand the commitment? Do you have what it takes to be the best pet parent ever? If you can answer "yes" to these questions we can talk about Gail's future.

Gail is up-to-date with routine shots and spayed.

We LOVE Junior!

His energy is wonderful and he is as ornery as they come. It doesn't hurt that he is so good-looking either. Weighing in at approximately 28 pounds, Junior is on the small side. He is from the Heaven Can Wait house and is now - after too many months - available for adoption.

Now through his quarantine period, he is ready for his "forever home and family." He will need kind & consistent training because no one has ever worked with him. With your patience and consistency, he will learn and become your next best friend.

If you can answer "yes" to these questions we can talk about Junior's future.

Junior is up-to-date with routine shots, house trained and neutered.

Gotta love Scooby! We do!!!

Rescued from the streets, Scooby appeared to be a "well-cared-for" and kind dog. After not being claimed from animal control, Scooby became a resident at the shelter. This boy is fun and sweet and wants to go home. Animal control staff kept him for a very long time in hopes of getting him adopted because his temperament is PERFECT!

He appears to get along with everyone, has wonderful manners, and wants to please. We love this boy and you will too! Containment is "key" with all dogs - especially a rescued dog - until boundary training has been established and he feels secure in his next home. We recommend a fenced yard or a safe and secure leash for brief tie-out sessions.

If you are a committed pet parent and want to be part of the development of a great dog that now has the opportunity to thrive, come to meet Scooby. Do you have up to 15 years to commit? Do you understand what it will take to be a responsible pet owner? If so, he may be your new best friend! He is residing at the clinic. Please call ahead to see him. We thank all of you for your continued support and for caring --- we care deeply too.

Scobby is up-to-date with routine shots and neutered.

Look at our Pomeranians!

Marsha & Marshal want to go home together ... they love each other very much!

These dogs are soooooooooooo precious and were recovered from a puppy mill where they had out-lived their usefulness! And, surprisingly, these furry guys are very social. None of them knew how to walk on a leash, nor were they housebroken. Now, after over 3 weeks in quarantine and receiving their vetting, all of these dogs understand potty breaks, enjoy walking on a leash, and are ready for their forever home. Let's give these guys a chance and allow them to know the true love of humanity and a secure home! A home that will care for them for the rest of their days, allow them to exercise and stretch their legs - and their minds. If you are a committed pet parent and understand the responsibility of pet ownership, call to make an appointment to meet these guys. Presently, they are not at our adoption center but are residing in another location.

Marsha & Marshal are up-to-date with routine shots and spayed/neutered.
Meet Shelby!

Poor, poor Shelby. She was one of the lucky 65 dogs that were transported from Georgia to Ohio to avoid a massive euthanasia. She arrived, with her litter mates, ill with the Parvo virus. Two of her siblings died during the trip back. Again, she is one of the lucky dogs but, sadly, she is the last pup to get her "forever home" --- all of her brothers and sisters are with their new families as she still awaits hers. She is a real "love bug" and deserves her chance to feel loved, be secure, and experience a true bond with humanity. Now through her quarantine period, she is ready for her "forever home and family." She will need kind & consistent training because no one has ever worked with her. With your patience and consistency, she will learn and become your next best friend. Containment is "key" - either on the end of a safely installed lead / leash or in a fenced yard - when rescuing a dog until trust and boundary training is established. After all, many of these guys have been living on the land and may hit the road to pursue the only home they've known - even if they are not wanted anymore. Do you have 15 years to share with a selfless dog? Do you understand the commitment? Do you have what it takes to be the best pet parent ever? If you can answer "yes" to these questions we can talk about Shelby's future.

Shelby is up-to-date with routine shots and spayed/neutered.

Meet Buddy!

Gotta love a Border Collie mix-breed dog - and gotta love Buddy's innocent face ...

Rescued from the streets, Buddy appeared to be a "well-cared-for" pet lost from his family. After advertising to locate his family was not fruitful, Buddy became a resident at the shelter. This boy is fun and sweet and wants to go home.

He appears to get along with everyone, has wonderful manners, and wants to please. We love this boy and you will too!

Containment is "key" with all dogs - especially the Border Collie breed - until boundary training has been established and he feels secure in his next home. We recommend a fenced yard or a safe and secure leash for brief tie-out sessions.

If you are a committed pet parent and want to be part of the development of a great dog that now has the opportunity to thrive, come to meet Buddy.

He is residing at the clinic. Please call ahead to see him. We thank all of you for your continued support and for caring --- we care deeply too.

Meet Dragon!

This young boy deserves so much more! Again, surrendered to the shelter for no fault of his own. Our staff really love this boy and believe he is a quick study to become the best, most well-behaved, companion ever! He has great manners for such a young boy. Now through his quarantine period, he is ready for his "forever home and family." He will need kind & consistent training because no one has ever worked with him. With your patience and consistency, he will learn and become your next best friend.

Containment is "key" - either on the end of a safely installed lead / leash or in a fenced yard - when rescuing a dog until trust and boundary training is established. After all, many of these guys have been living on the land and may hit the road to pursue the only home they've known. Even if they are not wanted anymore. If you can answer "yes" to these questions we can talk about Dragon's future. Note: you can change his name --- we would!

Dragon is up-to-date with routine shots and spayed/neutered.

Meet Red!

This little dog will be the most fun ever! Who doesn't love an ornery little dog? He looks exactly like a dwarfed Chow - weighing it at around 23 pounds and full grown! He's adorable and smart and has a strong will.

Now, he picks his friends in the shelter wisely; however, once in a home, he may be less selective. "Trust" doesn't come automatic for this little guy - but he's been through a lot!!! We rescued him less than 12 hours from being euthanized. Small dogs bond quickly and look to us for security. After all, that's why most small dogs become lap dogs ... that is where they feel the safest!

Do you have 15 years to share with a selfless dog? Do you understand the commitment? Do you have what it takes to be the best pet parent ever? If you can answer "yes" to these questions we can talk about Red's future.

Red is up-to-date with routine shots and spayed/neutered.

Meet Chelsea:

This beautiful dog will be the best pet ever! Who doesn't love a yellow Lab? And, she seems to love everyone she meets - people & animals. Labradors are the #1 most desired breed in this country; however, the #1 most euthanized breed too. Why? Because they require your help to become the best dogs ever. People often get Labs with no understanding of the breed - then surrender them to "pounds" when they tire of the demands of the dog. Get educated and make the right choices ... Now through her quarantine period, she is ready for her "forever home and family." She will need kind & consistent training because no one has ever worked with her. With your patience and consistency, she will learn and become your next best friend. Meet Brandy:

Meet Brandy ... She is a sweet girl and was rescued from Georgia - along with over 150 other adoptable animals that were spared euthanasia in the 11th hour. We traveled to Georgia in an effort to help an existing Humane Society that was in peril. Due to economics, they were closing down and would be taken over by the local county animal control facility; however, upon takeover, they were required to lower the census to less than 150 animals. Sadly, this meant 140 animals would be euthanized by the end of that week. Because Summit County Animal Control was stable, and networking with other rescues in NE Ohio was fruitful, we were able to make the trip and return with 65 - very sickly - animals. Thus, helping the facility to lower their numbers by nearly 50%. As the animals arrived, other rescues stood by to claim the pets that they had committed to take. All animals were processed and seen by our Lead Veterinarian for an assessment. Almost all required treatment for one or more illnesses. Every pet was emaciated. OOAKPR kept the majority and immediately began the quarantine and vetting process. We are glad to report that the animals are now healthy and pain-free and ready to begin their life in a happy and safe home where they will experience love and security for the rest of their days! Brandy is an adult Bluetick Coonhound / Catahoula Leopard mix-breed dog and is extremely sweet. We believe she is between 1 & 2 years of age and is a bit on the smaller side, weighing in at around 35 pounds. As you can understand, none of these animals were ever loved or trained and are now learning commands. But they are all smart, retaining training, eager to learn, and possess an intense desire to please. Containment is "key" until these dogs are secure and understand boundaries, which may take some time. If you are a committed pet parent and want to be part of the development of a great dog that was living an unfortunate life but now has the opportunity to thrive, come to meet these dogs. They are residing at the clinic and the adoption center. Call ahead to see Brandy. We thank all of you for your continued support and for caring --- we care deeply too.

Brandy is up-to-date with routine shots, house trained and spayed/neutered.
Meet Our Puppies!!!!

We can't keep them a secret anymore! They are just too cute!! These adorable Collie/St. Bernard pups are looking for a home. They need a secure home with a lot of love and attention. They are male and female and there are several of them. They need you now more than ever. This is the age when they begin to understand structure and routine. Dogs don't want to fail and because they depend on you to teach them, you must be present! The longest they can be left alone is for 4 hours at a time -- after all, they are babies!!! With appropriate attention and routine they will grow to become the adult dogs you want them to be.

Do you have what it takes to be the best pet parent ever? If so, we have the best pups ever!

Are you comfortable with a large-breed dog? If so, their next home may be with you!

Keep in mind, their next home must be their last! They doesn't deserve another "life change" - NOT EVER!
